Heartburn can occur when excess stomach acid comes into contact with the delicate lining of the oesophagus. Common symptoms of heartburn area burning sensation in the back of the throat and chest area, and a bitter taste at the back of the mouth. Indigestion symptoms include discomfort or pain in the upper part of the stomach, possible sickness/nausea and an uncomfortable bloated feeling.
Heartburn can be caused by acid escaping from the stomach when overeating. Alcohol and smoking, pressure on the stomach valve, coffee and tea and rich or fatty foods can cause excess acid to escape through the valve at the top of the stomach and rise into the oesophagus.
