Ferrograd is a prolonged release iron preparation containing dried ferrous sulphate 325mg, equivalent to 105mg elemental iron. Iron plays a vital role in the production of haemoglobin, the oxygen-transporting substance in red blood cells. This maintains an adequate oxygen supply to all parts of the body. Iron is stored in the body as ferritin and is mainly obtained from the diet from meat and liver. If the body does not have enough iron in the blood, iron deficiency anaemia develops. Ferrograd is a sustained release formulation, and therefore releases the medicine slowly over a number of hours. As a result of this slow release action there is a reduction the gastro-intestinal problems often associated with ferrous sulphate.Ferrograd is not recommended for children under 12 years old.Indigestion remedies (e.g. antacid ) must be taken at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after taking ferrograd.Ferrograd tablets may not work well if they are taken around the same time as the following food: tea, coffee, eggs, milk or milk products, wholegrain bread and cereals. Make sure you take your tablets at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating any of these foods.Store in a dry place below 25C.
