What is in Lamberts Acidophilus Extra 10?

Acidophilus Extra 10 is a food supplement. This tube is available in 30 and 60 capsules.

 Each small white capsule provides: 10 billion live bacteria (10 x 10⁹) Lactobacillus acidophilus, La5 Bifidobacterium, Bb12 (At the time of manufacture)

Also contains inactive ingredients: Capsule Shell (Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose, Colour: Titanium Dioxide), Dextrose, Potato Starch, Cellulose, Magnesium Stearate.

Information on the active ingredients in Acidophilus Extra 10

This probiotic product is milk free and contains two carefully selected strains of friendly bacteria, Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-5 and Bifidobacterium BB12, both of which have been widely used in clinical studies.

Probiotic supplements only work if the friendly bacteria are kept alive in a state of 'suspended animation' so that after swallowing they are still viable. Lamberts use sophisticated processes to ensure that the friendly bacteria remain alive whilst in their packaging. The special tube we use contains a desiccant lining to remove every trace of moisture from the capsules. This plus the fact that we keep the product in refrigerated storage conditions until despatch, means that our probiotics are guaranteed to be viable within the 'best before end' date.

After swallowing the capsules it is vitally important to ensure that the friendly bacteria survive their passage through the stomach. The acid conditions of the stomach have evolved to kill bacteria, and it is the first line of defence against pathogenic bacteria. To minimise the effect of the acid on the friendly bacteria they have been carefully freeze dried with an acid stable polysaccharide matrix. This shields the friendly bacteria from the harsh acidic conditions allowing up to 50 times more to survive. This means more will reach the lower bowel where they can hopefully start to replicate and grow. Lamberts was one of the first companies to produce probiotic capsules in the UK (over 20 years ago) so we have developed an expertise in this area. As a result of this, an independent study found our probiotic was one of the few tested that contained the species and the strength of bacteria claimed on the label.

What is Acidophilus Extra 10 recommended for?

The use of probiotics, or friendly bacteria, to help improve the health of the digestive system is now widely recommended by many practitioners and by millions of people who consume products containing probiotics every day. It is now accepted that the bacteria living in our bowels have a major influence on the health of our digestive system. In a healthy system pathogenic (bad) bacteria, and some yeasts are kept under control by the presence of vast armies of friendly bacteria, whose job it is to continue the break down of foodstuffs. Occasionally, the mix of species becomes disrupted, perhaps due to stress, travel, use of antibiotics or tummy bugs, all of which can result in digestive problems.

This is when a probiotic may be of help in re-establishing the normal healthy working of the digestive system.

However there are many times more friendly bacteria in one of these capsules than you will find in many shop bought yoghurts. 2. Take a course of probiotic capsules to help tackle specific problems. For example probiotics are now widely used in many European countries by people who are travelling, as an added 'insurance'. Probiotics are also increasingly recommended to people who are finishing a course of antibiotics. This is because the antibiotics may have upset the normal healthy balance of bacteria in the bowel. Probiotics are also now recommended to people who are suffering from bloating, as it is believed that this problem may result from a disrupted bowel flora.

Can I take other supplements with Acidophilus Extra 10?

There is no problem taking this product with other supplements. However, the use of oral antibiotics at the same time may reduce the effectiveness of this product.

Can other products help support my friendly bacteria?

Supplements called prebiotics (rather than probiotics) are not friendly bacteria, but a special soluble fibre that friendly bacteria feed on. By taking a prebiotic you can selectively feed friendly bacteria which allows them to flourish and grow relative to the unfriendly bacteria. Lamberts⁸ prebiotic is called Eliminex⁵, and is a pure natural sweet soluble fibre derived from chicory roots.

How to take Acidophilus Extra 10

Acidophilus Extra 10 can be taken on a long term basis as the bacteria provided by the formula are provided at safe levels. Take one capsule daily. Take with a glass of milk, water or with a meal. Do not swallow capsules with hot drinks, as heat kills bacteria. Take as above or as recommended by your practitioner or pharmacist. Food supplements should not be a substitute for a varied diet.
