What is Omacor?

Omacor has been shown to have a protective effect on the heart following a heart attack, and lowers the levels of triglycerides (a fat-like substance) in the blood. Each capsule contains the active ingredients eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) ethyl esters. These substances are called omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and are also found in some oily marine fish. Omacor has been shown to have a protective effect on the heart following a heart attack, and lowers the levels of triglycerides (a fat-like substance) in the blood. Omacor capsules also contain 4mg alpha-tocopherol, gelatin, glycerol and purified water. Omacor comes in packs of 28 capsules and packs of 100 Capsules.

What is Omacor used for?

In combination with other medicines, for treatment after a heart attack to reduce the risk of further heart attacks and improve overall survival.To treat high levels of triglyceride in the blood of certain patients, but only after changes to the diet have been ineffective. If you are takinganticoagulant medication (drugs to thin the blood such as warfarin) you may need additional blood tests and adjustment of your usual anticoagulant dose. If you have problems with your liver your doctor will monitor any effects Omacor may have on your liver with blood tests.

How to take Omacor

Take the capsules with water. You may take the capsules at meal times to help reduce gastrointestinal side effects. The duration of treatment will be decided by your doctor. Treatment after a heart attack: The usual dose is one capsule daily. Hypertriglyceridaemia (high blood triglyceride levels): The usual dose is 2 to 4 capsules a day as recommended by a doctor. If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose, in which case take the next dose as usual. Do not increase the dose to make up for missed doses.

Before taking Omacor

Always inform your doctor before taking any new medications - Omacor should not be used during pregnancy and breast-feeding unless absolutely necessary. Omacor should not be given to children.

If you are allergic to Omacor or to any of the ingredients in the capsules you should not take Omacor. You should ask your doctor before taking Omacor if:

  • You are taking anticoagulant medication (drugs to thin the blood such aswarfarin)
  • You have liver disease
  • You have had surgery or suffered a trauma recently
  • You are over 70 years of age
  • You suffer from a renal disease
  • You are diabetic and your condition is not controlled.
If you are in any doubt consult with your GP or Pharmacist. Storage of Omacor Do not store your capsules above 25 °C. Do not freeze. Keep all medicines out of the reach and sight of children. Do not use after the expiry date on the outer packaging. You should carefully read all product packaging and labels prior to use
