Cystitis (Lower Urinary Tract Infection)

Cystitis is inflammation of the bladder, usually caused by a bladder infection. It’s a common type of urinary tract infection (UTI), particularly in women, and is usually more of a nuisance than a cause for serious concern. Mild cases will often get better by themselves within a few days. But some people experience episodes of cystitis frequently and may need regular or long-term treatment.

Treatment Options

Pregnant Women & Men

We are unable to prescribe to patients who fall into this category, please speak to you GP. We have included information to help you below.

Pregnant Women

Pregnant women can be prescribed anti-biotics to treat cystitis, the first line treatment is Nitrofurantoin, but it is a longer course of treatment than for non-pregnant women.

Men

Men can also be prescribed anti-biotics to treat cystitis, the first line treatment is Trimethoprim, which is different to the treatments for women.

Again, there are second-line treatment if required but you will need to speak to your GP.

Non-Pregnant Women

For women who fall into this category there are two main options for the treatment of Cystitis.

Option 1: Is to wait for 48 hours and see if the infection starts to get better by itself. if this happens then there is no need for medication to be prescribed as your body is fighting off the infection naturally. If at any point your symptoms get worse you will need to take anti-biotics

Option 2: Is to start taking anti-biotics immediately. The first line treatment for Cystitis is Nitrofurantoin, this medication can come in two forms. The first is Modified Release (this means the medication is released slowly once the tablet is taken) or standard release (where it is all released at once when taken). The dosage of medicine you recieve will reflect the type of medicine you have recieved. So if you are prescribed Modified Release you will take a 100mg tablet twice a day for 3 days. if you are prescribed Standard Release you will take a 50mg tablet four times a day for 3 days. Modified Release is the normal prescription, you will only be prescribed Standard Release if Modified Release is unavailable.

There are pros and cons to each of these options, but there is very little difference in outcomes. You should be aware that if you take anti-biotics you could experience side effects and there is a risk of increasing anti-biotic resistance. More information is available here

Don’t worry if the first line treatment isn’t effective as there are other options, we recommend you visit your GP if your first line anti-biotic treatment isn’t effective.

Additional Steps

In addition to anti-biotic treatments, some people have additional steps they like to take to help treat and manage cystitis. There isn’t evidence to support all of these but some individuals believe they work. Steps include;

  • Taking pain killers, such as paracetamol and ibuprofen to manage the discomfort
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Don’t have sex until the infection has cleared up
  • Some people believe that drinking cranberry juice or other products that lowers the acidity of their urine helps reduce their symptoms
