What is Anti-Malaria?

Malaria is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening disease. It is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito, which passes the malaria parasite into the bloodstream.

It is carried by mosquitos in high risk areas such as Africa, Asia, Central and South America and Middle East.

You must get medical advice on which anti-malarial medicines to take from a suitable trained doctor or pharmacist. You may also need additional vaccinations and advice, see the website below for advice specific to your travel destination;

https://www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk/destinations.aspx

No medicine is 100% effective. If you have a high temperature (fever) during your visit to a malaria area, or up to a year after, you should suspect malaria. Contact a doctor immediately and let them know you have visited a malaria area.

Causes

Malaria is caused by the Plasmodium parasite. The parasite can be spread to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes.

There are many different types of plasmodium parasite, but only 5 types cause malaria in humans.

Symptoms

Symptoms of malaria can develop as quickly as 7 days after you're bitten by an infected mosquito. Typically, the time between being infected and when symptoms start (incubation period) is 7 to 18 days, depending on the specific parasite you're infected with. However, in some cases it can take up to a year for symptoms to develop.

The initial symptoms of malaria are flu-like and include;

  • A high temperature of 38C or above
  • Feeling hot and shivery
  • Headaches
  • Vomiting
  • Muscle Pains
  • Diarrhoea
  • Generally Feeling Unwell

Treatments

Malarone (atovaquone and proguanil hydrochloride)

  • Helps prevent malaria by killing the parasite
  • Can also help treat malaria should you catch it
  • Take with food or milky drink where possible
  • Take at the same time each day
  • Dose: One tablet daily starting 1 to 2 days before travelling to an area which has malaria
  • Continue to take every day during your stay AND for another 7 days after your return to a malaria free area.

Paludrine (Proguanil)

  • Start taking one week before entering malaria area. If this is not possible, at least 2 days before. You must continue to take it during your stay and for 4 weeks after leaving the malaria area.
  • The dose for adults is two tablets daily
  • Take at the same time each day after food  with water

As well as taking tablets to prevent malaria, it is important you also take steps to avoid being bitten

  • Insect repellent on exposed skin
  • Wear light coloured clothing that covers most of the body, especially after sunset when mosquitos are most active
  • Sleep in a screened room or under a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide
  • Close windows and doors after sunset if they are not screened
  • Use insecticides to clear room or deter mosquitos from entering
