What is Thrush?

Thrush is a common yeast infection caused by a fungus called candida albicans. It is more often associated with women but both men and woman can get thrush. It is usually harmless if you are in good health but it can be uncomfortable and may keep coming back.

Symptoms

Thrush symptoms in women:

  • itching and irritation around the vagina
  • soreness and stinging during sex and when you pee

Thrush symptoms in men

  • irritation, burning and redness around the head of the penis and under the foreskin
  • a white discharge (like cottage cheese)
  • an unpleasant smell

What causes thrush?

Thrush us caused by a yeast called candida albicans. It usually lives harmlessly in or around you vagina. When the natural balance of micro-organisms is disrupted then the candida multiplies more than usual and causes thrush. Its not a sexually transmitted infection but it can be triggered and sometimes passed on through sex.

It is more common in certain groups of people such as;

  • Females in their 20s and 30s
  • Pregnant women
  • Women going through the menopause
  • Women who experience dryness of the vagina – as this can cause irritation during sex
  • Those taking antibiotics
  • Those with poorly controlled diabetes
  • Those with a weakened immune system (e.g. people with HIV or those undergoing chemotherapy)

Treatments

To help ease the symptoms of thrush and prevent thrush returning in future:

  • wash with water and an emollient (such as E45 cream) and avoid soaps and shower gels
  • take showers instead of baths
  • dry properly after washing
  • do not use douches or deodorant
  • wear cotton underwear and avoid tight underwear and tights
  • avoid sex until the thrush has cleared, or wear a condom if you do
