Almus Ibuprofen & Codeine – 24 Tablets

Dual-action pain relief combining an anti-inflammatory (ibuprofen) with a mild opioid analgesic (codeine) for short-term use when other painkillers alone are not effective.

Over-the-counter (Pharmacy only) For adults & adolescents ≥12 years Short-term use ≤3 days

Important: Codeine can cause addiction. For 3 days’ use only. If you need to use this medicine for more than three days, see your doctor or pharmacist.

What it’s for

Short-term relief of acute moderate pain such as migraine, dental pain, period pain, rheumatic and muscular pain, backache, and neuralgia when ibuprofen or other painkillers alone have not provided adequate relief.

How it works

  • Ibuprofen reduces pain, swelling, and inflammation (NSAID).
  • Codeine phosphate acts on pain signals to enhance pain relief.

Typical UK pharmacy strength per tablet: ibuprofen 200 mg + codeine phosphate 12.8 mg (check your pack to confirm the exact strength).

Do not use if

  • You are allergic to ibuprofen, codeine, aspirin, other NSAIDs, or any ingredients.
  • You have ever had a stomach/duodenal ulcer, gastrointestinal bleeding, or perforation related to NSAIDs, or you currently have indigestion/heartburn or blood in stools/black stools.
  • You have severe heart, kidney, or liver failure; a bleeding disorder; or you are taking other NSAIDs or high-dose aspirin.
  • You are in the last 3 months of pregnancy or are breastfeeding (risk of serious side effects in the infant; codeine can pass into breast milk).
  • You are a known ultra-rapid metaboliser of CYP2D6 (risk of opioid toxicity from codeine).
  • You need to drive or operate machinery and feel drowsy, dizzy, or confused after taking this medicine.

Pack Size

Box of 24 tablets. Read the enclosed leaflet before use.

Helpful Guidance

  • Try the lowest effective dose for the shortest time.
  • Consider non-drug measures too (rest, hydration, heat/cold packs) and speak to a pharmacist if unsure this product is right for you.
  • If you need pain relief for more than 3 days, or your pain returns quickly, consult a healthcare professional.

This information is a general guide and does not replace the patient information leaflet or medical advice from your pharmacist or doctor. Always read the label.

Dosage & Directions

  • Adults & adolescents 12–18 years: Take 1–2 tablets with water, preferably with food or milk, every 4–6 hours as needed.
  • Maximum: 6 tablets in 24 hours.
  • Duration: Use for up to 3 days only. If pain persists, worsens, or new symptoms occur, seek medical advice.
  • Swallow whole: Do not chew or crush. Do not take with other products containing ibuprofen, codeine, or other opioids.

Not for children under 12 years. Adolescents (12–18) with breathing problems should not take codeine unless advised by a doctor.

Warnings & Precautions

  • Addiction & withdrawal: Codeine can cause addiction if used for more than 3 days. If you stop after prolonged use, you may feel restless or irritable—seek advice.
  • Breathing & sedation: Risk of drowsiness, dizziness, and respiratory depression—do not drink alcohol and avoid other sedating medicines.
  • Stomach risks (NSAIDs): Take with food. Stop and seek help if you develop severe stomach pain, vomiting blood, or black stools.
  • Skin & allergy: Rarely, serious skin reactions can occur—stop immediately if you get a rash, blistering, or swelling.
  • Fertility: NSAIDs may impair female fertility while taking them (reversible on stopping).
  • Dehydration & illness: Higher kidney risk if dehydrated (e.g., due to vomiting/diarrhoea) or with some illnesses—maintain fluid intake.

Interactions

  • Do not combine with other NSAIDs (e.g., naproxen), aspirin used for pain, or other opioids.
  • Talk to a pharmacist/doctor if you take: anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin), SSRIs, corticosteroids, lithium, methotrexate, diuretics, ACE inhibitors/ARBs, antihypertensives, sedating antihistamines, benzodiazepines, or other CNS depressants.
  • Avoid alcohol—increases drowsiness and breathing risk.

Possible Side Effects

  • Common: nausea, constipation, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, indigestion, heartburn.
  • Stop and seek medical help immediately if you experience: allergic reaction (wheezing, swelling, rash), severe stomach pain/bleeding, unexplained bruising, severe dizziness, confusion, breathing difficulties, or signs of opioid overdose (pin-point pupils, extreme sleepiness).

Report side effects via your national scheme (e.g., UK Yellow Card).

Active: Ibuprofen; Codeine phosphate hemihydrate.
