How It Works
Benzoyl peroxide tackles the primary causes of acne by lowering the level of acne-causing bacteria on the skin and helping keep pores clear. It can also reduce redness and the number of inflamed spots when used regularly. How to Combine With Your Routine
- Cleanser → Acnecide Gel.
- When introducing retinoids, alternate nights or apply at a different time of day to minimise irritation.
Dosage & Directions
- Patch test: Apply a small amount to a limited skin area once daily for 2–3 days. If no irritation occurs, begin regular use.
- Cleanse & dry: Wash the affected area with a mild, non-comedogenic cleanser and gently pat dry.
- Apply a thin layer: Use a pea-sized amount for each affected area. Avoid the eyes, eyelids, lips, corners of the nose and any broken/irritated skin.
- Frequency (12+ years):
- Start: Once daily in the evening for the first few days.
- If well tolerated: Increase to twice daily (morning and evening).
- If dryness/irritation occurs: Reduce to once daily or every other day and use a non-comedogenic moisturiser.
- Hands: Wash hands before and after application.
- Sun protection: Benzoyl peroxide can increase sensitivity to sunlight. Apply SPF 30+ in the daytime and limit UV exposure.
- Bleaching caution: May bleach hair, dyed fabrics, towels, bedding and clothing. Allow gel to dry fully before contact.
- Treatment duration: Visible improvement typically appears within a few weeks. Continue routine if improving; seek advice if no benefit after 6–8 weeks.
Ingredients
Active: Benzoyl Peroxide 5% w/w.
Excipients: Carbomer, glycerol, disodium edetate, sodium hydroxide, purified water and other standard gel bases (check carton for the full current list).
Warnings & Safety
- For external use only. Do not swallow or use inside the mouth, nose, or on genitals.
- Allergy alert: Do not use if you are allergic to benzoyl peroxide or any listed ingredients. Stop use and seek medical advice if severe irritation, swelling, blistering or burning occurs.
- Skin irritation: Redness, dryness, peeling and a mild burning sensation can occur, especially at the start. Reduce frequency or pause use if needed.
- Eyes & sensitive areas: Avoid contact with eyes, eyelids, lips and broken/eczema-prone skin. Rinse with plenty of water if contact occurs.
- Photosensitivity: Increases sensitivity to sunlight and UV lamps. Use sunscreen and protective clothing; avoid tanning beds.
- Bleaching risk: Can bleach hair and coloured fabrics. Allow to dry before skin contacts textiles.
- Age: Not usually recommended under 12 years unless advised by a healthcare professional.
- Pregnancy & breastfeeding: Consult a healthcare professional before use. If breastfeeding, avoid application to the chest to prevent infant contact.
- Drug/skin care interactions: Using with other acne treatments (e.g., retinoids, salicylic acid, AHA/BHA, alcohol-based toners) may increase irritation. Introduce products slowly and avoid layering strong actives at the same time without advice.
- Medical advice: If acne is severe, widespread, or causing scarring, consult a pharmacist or doctor.
- Storage: Keep below 25°C. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Replace cap tightly after use.
