What is Phenergan? Phenergan contains the active ingredient promethazine, which is a sedating antihistamine. When you have an allergic reaction, your body creates a natural substance called histamine. Histamine sends signals to your body that trigger symptoms of allergy, such as a runny nose or watery eyes. Antihistamines work by blocking histamines, which prevents you from suffering from the symptoms of an allergic reaction What can you use Phenergan for? Phenergan can be used for a number of different conditions. It can be used to ease the symptoms of an allergic reaction or hay fever such as a runny nose, watery or itchy eyes, rashes, coughs and sneezes. It can be used to ease motion sickness by preventing nausea. As Phenergan causes drowsiness, it can also be used as a short-term remedy for insomnia. How should I take Phenergan? To treat allergies: Children aged 5-10 - Take 1 x 25mg tablet at night Children over 10 years, adults and elderly - Begin treatment with 1 x 25mg tablet at night. If necessary, you can increase the amount to a maximum of 1 x 25mg tablet twice a day To treat or prevent nausea or travel sickness: Children aged 5-10 years - Do not use these tablets to treat children in this age. Instead please use Phenergan Elixir or Phenergan 10mg tablets Children over 10, adults and elderly - Take 1 x 25mg tablet the night before you travel. Repeat dose after 6-8 hours if needed. As a short term sedative or to treat short term insomnia Children ages 5-10 - Take 1 x 25mg tablet at night time Children over 10 years, adults and the elderly - Take 1-2 x 25mg tablets at night time Do not take more than the recommended daily dose of this product. Do not take Phenergan tablets for more than 7 days at a time. If your symptoms get worse or do not improve after 7 days, speak to your doctor right away. Can I take Phenergan with other medications? Phenergan can interact with some medicines, including herbal medicines, so please speak to a doctor or pharmacist before taking Phenergan if you are taking any other medication Do NOT take this product if you are taking Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs), or have stopped taking them within the past 14 days. Speak with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product if you are taking Anticholinergic medicines such as medicines for IBS, asthma or weak bladder Medicines for depression such as amitriptyline Medicines to help you sleep or relax such as diazepam or zolpidem Medicines such as aspirin for pain When should I avoid taking Phenergan tablets? Phenergan tablets are not suitable for use by children under the age of 5. Do not use this product if you are allergic to promethazine or any of the other ingredients listed in the leaflet.
