Promethazine hydrochloride • Antihistamine
Phenergan 25mg Tablets contain promethazine hydrochloride, a sedating antihistamine that helps relieve allergy symptoms (such as hay fever, urticaria and itchy rashes), aids short-term night-time sedation, and helps prevent or relieve travel sickness and nausea.
Pack Size
56 tablets • Each tablet contains 25mg promethazine HCl.
Suitable for
Adults (including the elderly) and children aged 10 years and over for tablets. For younger children, a liquid formulation is usually recommended (seek pharmacist/doctor advice).
What it does
- Relieves allergy symptoms (sneezing, runny/itchy nose, itchy skin, hives).
- Short-term night-time sedation (adults) to aid sleep.
- Prevention and relief of travel sickness and nausea.
Helpful Advice
If taking for short-term sleep problems, avoid use longer than a few nights in a row without medical advice. For hay fever, also consider non-drowsy daytime antihistamines. For travel sickness, dose the night before travel and follow non-drug measures (front seat, horizon focus, ventilation).

How to Take (Dosage)
Always use the lowest effective dose. Do not exceed the stated dose. If symptoms persist or worsen, seek medical advice.
Allergies (e.g., hay fever, rashes/hives)
- Adults & children 10+ years: Start with 25mg at night. If needed, may increase up to 25mg twice daily (morning and night).
Sedation is common—assess your response before increasing.
Travel Sickness / Nausea
- Adults & children 10+ years (prevention): 25mg the night before travel; may repeat 25mg after 6–8 hours on the day of travel if needed.
- Adults (treatment): 25mg at first signs; another 25mg the same evening if required.
Short-Term Night-Time Sedation (Adults)
- Adults (including elderly) & children 10+ years: 25–50mg at night for short-term use only.
Children under 10 years: Consult a healthcare professional; liquid or lower-strength products are generally recommended. Do not give to children under 2 years.
Directions
- Swallow tablets with water. Preferably take night-time doses in the evening.
- Avoid alcohol and other medicines that cause drowsiness while taking Phenergan.
- If you miss a dose for allergies, take it when remembered unless it’s close to the next dose. For sleep, skip the missed dose and take the next night’s dose only.
Warnings & Precautions
Do not take if:
- You are allergic to promethazine or any ingredient in the tablets.
- The person is under 2 years of age.
- You are taking, or have taken in the last 14 days, a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) for depression.
- The person is unconscious or have severe drowsiness, dizziness or headache.
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before use if you:
- Have asthma or other breathing/lung problems, sleep apnoea, or severe respiratory disease.
- Have glaucoma, epilepsy, liver or kidney problems, heart problems, urinary retention, prostate enlargement, bowel obstruction, or hearing problems.
- Are elderly (increased risk of side effects such as confusion or dizziness).
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding—use only on medical advice.
Important safety information
- Drowsiness: May cause significant drowsiness. Do not drive or operate machinery if affected.
- Alcohol & CNS depressants: Avoid alcohol. Caution with other sedatives, opioid painkillers, anxiolytics, hypnotics, or antihistamines.
- Sun sensitivity: May increase photosensitivity—avoid strong sunlight and sunbeds.
- Children: Use the lowest effective dose and for the shortest time. Do not use in children under 2 years.
- Overdose: Seek urgent medical help. Symptoms may include severe drowsiness, confusion, agitation (especially in children), seizures, irregular heartbeat, and breathing difficulties.
Possible Side Effects
- Common: drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, difficulty passing urine.
- Occasional: confusion (especially in older adults), headache, low blood pressure (light-headedness), GI upset, skin rash/itch.
- Seek urgent help if signs of allergic reaction (swelling, breathing difficulty), jaundice, irregular/fast heartbeat, unusual muscle movements, or symptoms of neuroleptic malignant syndrome occur.
Ingredients
Active: Promethazine hydrochloride 25mg per tablet.
Excipients include: lactose, maize starch, pregelatinised maize starch, magnesium stearate, talc, coating components (may contain colourants such as titanium dioxide and blues). See leaflet for full list.
Storage
- Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
- Store below 25°C in the original container and protect from light.
- Do not use after the expiry date shown on the pack.
