Dosage
Adults and adolescents over 12 years:
- Take 1 tablet (400mg) with water, preferably with or after food.
- If needed, you may take 1 tablet every 4–6 hours.
- Do not take more than 3 tablets (1200mg) in 24 hours, unless a doctor has told you to.
Children under 12 years: not recommended. Speak to a doctor or pharmacist.
Always use the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible time.
How to Take
- Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
- Take with food or milk if you have a sensitive stomach.
- Do not use for more than 3 days for fever or 10 days for pain unless your doctor tells you to.
Warnings and Precautions
Do NOT take this medicine if:
- You are allergic to ibuprofen, aspirin, or any other NSAID.
- You have ever had asthma, wheezing, runny nose, swelling, or hives after taking aspirin or other painkillers.
- You have or have had a stomach or duodenal ulcer, bleeding, or perforation.
- You have severe heart, kidney, or liver problems.
- You are in the last 3 months of pregnancy.
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking ibuprofen if:
- You have asthma or hay fever
- You have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, or you smoke
- You have kidney, liver, or heart problems
- You have a history of stomach or intestinal problems
- You are taking other medicines that can increase the risk of bleeding (e.g. aspirin, warfarin, corticosteroids, SSRIs)
- You are in the first 6 months of pregnancy or are breastfeeding
Important: NSAIDs such as ibuprofen may be associated with a small increased risk of heart attack or stroke, especially when used at high doses or for long periods. Do not exceed the recommended dose.
Possible Side Effects
Like all medicines, ibuprofen can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Stop taking and seek medical help immediately if you notice:
- Signs of an allergic reaction: swelling of face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing
- Blood in vomit or stools, or black/tarry stools
- Severe stomach pain
