How It Works
Bisacodyl is a stimulant laxative. Dosage & Directions
Always read the label and package leaflet. Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest time.
- Adults and adolescents (12+): 1–2 tablets (5–10 mg) once daily, preferably at night.
- Children 0-17 years: Not recommended.
- Swallow whole with water. Do not crush or chew. Do not take with milk or antacids; leave at least 1 hour before/after these products.
- Onset: usually 6–12 hours after dosing.
- Duration: Do not use for more than 5–7 days without medical advice.
Warnings & Precautions
- Do not use if you have intestinal blockage, acute surgical abdominal conditions (e.g., appendicitis), severe dehydration, or severe abdominal pain with nausea/vomiting—seek medical advice.
- Pregnancy & breastfeeding: consult a healthcare professional before use.
- Medicines & interactions: tell your doctor/pharmacist if you take diuretics, corticosteroids, or cardiac glycosides (e.g., digoxin). Excessive doses may lower potassium, increasing sensitivity to these medicines.
- Side effects: abdominal cramps, diarrhoea, nausea, and dizziness can occur. Stop use and seek advice if you experience severe pain, persistent diarrhoea, or rectal bleeding.
- Tolerance & dependence: prolonged or excessive use may lead to dependence or worsening constipation. Use only as needed.
- Allergy/intolerance: tablets contain lactose and sucrose (check full ingredients if you have intolerances).
How to Use Safely
- Try lifestyle measures first: fibre-rich diet, adequate fluids, and regular exercise.
- If you miss a dose, take your next dose as usual. Do not double up.
- Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
