What it does

Periactin is a sedating antihistamine (H₁ receptor antagonist) that helps relieve common allergy symptoms and pruritus (itching).

Suitable for

Adults and adolescents as directed by a healthcare professional
Short-term relief of allergic rhinitis and itchy skin conditions

Not suitable for

Children under 2 years
People taking MAOIs (or within 14 days of stopping)
Those with narrow-angle glaucoma, urinary retention, or severe prostate problems

Dosage & how to take

Always follow the directions on your pharmacy label or your doctor’s advice. Do not exceed the stated dose.

Adults: typical starting dose is 4 mg three times daily (every ~8 hours). Many adults respond to 12–16 mg per day in divided doses. Maximum daily dose is usually 32 mg/day and should not exceed 0.5 mg/kg/day.
Elderly (65+): increased risk of drowsiness, dizziness and low blood pressure—use with caution and consult a clinician.
Children: dosing is specialist-directed only. Do not use under 2 years. Ask a pharmacist or doctor for age-appropriate advice.

Swallow tablets with water. If you miss a dose, take the next dose at the usual time—do not double up.

Warnings & precautions

May cause drowsiness. Avoid driving, cycling or operating machinery until you know how it affects you.
Avoid alcohol and other sedatives—additive drowsiness can occur.
Do not use with MAOIs (e.g., phenelzine, tranylcypromine) or within 14 days of stopping them.
Consult your doctor before use if you have glaucoma, urinary retention, enlarged prostate, peptic ulcer with narrowing, asthma, hyperthyroidism, or liver disease.
Pregnancy/breast-feeding: seek medical advice before use.
If you experience symptoms of a serious allergic reaction (e.g., swelling of face/throat, rash, difficulty breathing, fainting), stop taking and seek emergency help.

Side effects can include dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, dizziness and sedation. Stop use and speak to a healthcare professional if side effects are severe or persistent.
