What it does

Movicol draws water into the bowel to soften hard, dry stools and increase stool volume, helping restore regularity without sudden urgency. The added electrolytes (sodium, potassium, hydrogen carbonate, chloride) help maintain the body’s normal salt balance during treatment.

Dosage & how to take

Adults

Constipation: Dissolve 1 sachet in about 125 ml of water. Stir until clear. Take 1–3 sachets per day as needed, in divided doses. Use the lowest dose that relieves symptoms.
Faecal impaction (doctor-diagnosed): Up to 8 sachets in one day, usually for no more than 3 days. Dissolve each sachet separately; you may chill the made-up solution to improve taste.

Preparation tips

Always dissolve the powder before swallowing.
May be taken with or without food.
Allow 24–48 hours for full effect.
Drink plenty of water and include fibre in your diet during use.

Warnings & precautions

Do not use if you have a bowel perforation or obstruction (ileus), severe inflammatory bowel disease (e.g., active ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s), toxic megacolon, or if you are allergic to any ingredient.
Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before use if you have heart or kidney problems, are on a controlled sodium/potassium diet, or take other medicines (Movicol can affect how quickly some tablets are absorbed).
Children under 12: use only on medical advice and choose a paediatric formulation.
Pregnancy & breastfeeding: Generally considered acceptable; seek medical advice first.
Stop and seek medical help if you develop severe diarrhoea, persistent abdominal pain, signs of dehydration, swelling, rash, or breathing difficulties.
If there is no improvement after 14 days for constipation, or if symptoms worsen, consult a healthcare professional.

Possible side effects

Common: bloating, wind, mild nausea or abdominal discomfort, loose stools. Serious (rare): allergic reactions (rash, itching, wheeze) or electrolyte disturbances. If concerned, stop taking and seek advice.

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct heat and moisture.
Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
Use the made-up solution soon after preparation; discard any unused solution.

Each sachet of Movicol contains the following:

Macrogol 3350 13.125 g

Sodium Chloride 0.3507 g

Sodium Bicarbonate 0.1785 g

Potassium Chloride 0.0466 g

Movicol also contains lime and lemon flavour, and acesulfame potassium as a sweetener. Lemon and lime flavour contains the following ingredients: acacia solids, maltodextrin, lime oil, lemon oil, citral, citric acid and water.

When it is made into a drink with 125 millilitres of water, each sachet gives the equivalent of:
