Product description
CosmoCol is a balanced osmotic laxative combining macrogol 3350 with sodium chloride, sodium hydrogen carbonate, and potassium chloride. It works by holding water in the bowel to soften stools and increase stool volume, restoring comfortable bowel movements without causing a sudden urge.

FAQs
How long does CosmoCol take to work? It typically produces a comfortable bowel movement within 24–48 hours for constipation. For faecal impaction, follow professional advice.
Can I take it long-term? Stimulant laxatives are not licensed for long term use. Discuss with your healthcare professional should you require long term treatment.
How to prepare
- Empty the contents of one sachet into a glass.
- Add ~125 ml (half a glass) of water.
- Stir until the powder is fully dissolved, then drink.
Prepared solution may be covered and refrigerated and used within 24 hours. Stir again before use.
Dosage
Constipation (Adults & adolescents 12+)
- Starting dose: 1 sachet, 1–3 times daily, according to response.
- Maintenance: Usually 1–2 sachets daily. Adjust up or down to achieve soft, comfortable stools.
Faecal impaction (Adults & adolescents 12+)
- Up to 8 sachets in a day, taken over a 6-hour period, for up to 3 days only and on the advice/supervision of a healthcare professional.
Children under 12 years: Use only if a specific paediatric product and dosing schedule is provided by a healthcare professional.
Elderly / renal impairment / pregnancy & breastfeeding: Usually no dose adjustment needed, but seek medical advice if unsure.
Timing with other medicines: Separate CosmoCol doses from other oral medicines by at least 2 hours.

Warnings & precautions
- Do not use if you have a gut blockage (intestinal obstruction, ileus), a perforated gut, severe inflammatory bowel disease (e.g., ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s), toxic megacolon, or if you are allergic to macrogol (PEG) or any ingredient.
- Talk to your doctor/pharmacist before use if you have persistent abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, reflux, sudden change in bowel habit lasting >2 weeks, heart or kidney disease, are on a controlled sodium/potassium diet, or take diuretics, cardiac glycosides, or other medicines that may be affected by fluid/electrolyte changes.
- Possible side effects: bloating, flatulence, stomach rumbling, nausea, diarrhoea, abdominal discomfort; rarely allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling, breathing difficulty). Stop use and seek medical help if you develop signs of allergy or severe diarrhoea.
- Hydration: Drink fluids during treatment. Reduce the dose if stools become too loose.
- If symptoms worsen, persist >14 days, or faecal impaction is suspected, seek medical advice.
