Alka-Seltzer Original contains aspirin and is supplied as effervescent tablets that dissolve in water to create a sparkling solution.
It provides effective relief from mild to moderate pain and can also help reduce a high temperature. The convenient effervescent format is easy to prepare and take.
What Alka-Seltzer Original Is Used For
Alka-Seltzer Original may be used for the relief of:
- Headaches and migraines
- Backache, lumbago and nerve pain
- Period pain
- Toothache and sore throat
- Cold and flu symptoms
- Rheumatic and arthritic pain
- Muscular aches, tenderness and stiffness
- Joint pain, swelling and stiffness
- Strains and sprains
- High temperature and fever
Pack Contents
This pack contains 20 white effervescent tablets in protective foil pouches.
Dosage
Adults and children aged 16 years and over:
Dissolve two tablets completely in half a glass, approximately 100ml, of water before taking.
The dose may be repeated every four hours when required.
Do not take more than eight tablets in any 24-hour period.
Do not take Alka-Seltzer Original for more than three consecutive days. Speak to a doctor if symptoms do not improve or become worse.
Do not swallow the tablets whole. They must always be dissolved in water before use.
Warnings
Do not give this medicine to children under 16 years of age unless specifically instructed by a doctor. Aspirin has been associated with Reye’s syndrome, a rare but serious condition affecting children.
Do not take Alka-Seltzer Original if you:
- Are allergic to aspirin, salicylates or any of the ingredients
- Have previously experienced asthma, rhinitis, hives or another allergic reaction after taking aspirin or an anti-inflammatory painkiller
- Have or have previously had a stomach or duodenal ulcer
- Have a condition that causes excessive bleeding, such as haemophilia
- Have severe kidney, liver or heart problems
- Take methotrexate at a dose of 15mg per week or more
- Are in the final three months of pregnancy
- Are breastfeeding
Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use if you have asthma, gout, recurring stomach problems, G6PD deficiency, circulation problems, or kidney, liver or heart problems. Seek advice before taking this medicine during the first six months of pregnancy or if you are trying to become pregnant.
Speak to a healthcare professional before use if you take anticoagulants, blood-pressure medicines, diuretics, diabetes medicines, epilepsy medicines, corticosteroids, antidepressants, methotrexate, gout treatments or other pain-relieving or anti-inflammatory medicines.
Avoid drinking alcohol while taking this medicine.
Each tablet contains 477mg of sodium. People following a controlled-sodium diet should consult a doctor or pharmacist before use.
Stop taking the medicine and seek urgent medical help if you experience difficulty breathing or swallowing, facial or throat swelling, a severe skin reaction, chest pain with signs of an allergic reaction, black or bloody stools, vomiting blood, unusual bleeding or symptoms of a serious allergic reaction.
If more than the recommended dose is taken, seek immediate medical attention, even if you feel well. Take the packaging and patient leaflet with you.
Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children. Always read the enclosed patient information leaflet before use.
Ingredients
Active ingredient: Each tablet contains 324mg aspirin, also known as acetylsalicylic acid.
Other ingredients: Sodium hydrogen carbonate and citric acid.
Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place and keep the tablets in their original carton. Do not use a tablet if its foil pouch is damaged or if the tablet appears powdery or discoloured.
