What it is

Emla Cream 5% is a topical local anaesthetic that temporarily numbs the surface of the skin. It is commonly used before needle procedures (e.g., blood tests, vaccinations), minor dermatological procedures, and similar interventions.

For external use on intact skin.
Works best under the supplied occlusive dressings.
Suitable for adults (see leaflet/healthcare advice).

Dosage

How to use

Apply a thick layer of cream to the clean, dry area. Do not rub in.
Cover with the provided airtight, watertight dressing. Smooth edges to seal.
Leave in place for the recommended time (see Dosage below).
Remove the dressing and wipe off all cream just before the procedure.

Useful tips

Mark the edges of the covered area so you remember where to place/remove the dressing.
Set a timer for the intended application time.

Warnings & precautions

For external use only. Do not use in eyes, inside ears, on open wounds, or on broken/irritated skin unless a clinician advises.
Do not use if you are allergic to amide local anaesthetics (e.g., lidocaine, prilocaine) or any ingredients in the cream.
Infants/children: Only to be used by a healthcare professional; risk of methaemoglobinaemia exists, especially with overdose or in G6PD deficiency.
Tell your doctor/pharmacist about heart rhythm medicines or other local anaesthetics you use.
May cause temporary skin paling, redness, or mild burning/itching where applied.
If accidental eye exposure occurs, rinse immediately with water or saline and seek advice.
Pregnancy/breast-feeding: seek professional advice before use.
